The Hair Shop review

By Jaci Finch, licensed cosmetologist (Utah)21 years behind the chairUpdated 2026-08-31

The Hair Shop is a full-range extension supplier, not a tape specialist, and the most openly priced company here: forty-six tools with published prices and no login. Its Tape-in Remover is $9.50 for 3.4 fl oz with a full ingredient list. The trade-off is that it publishes no wear duration on any tape.

The Hair Shop sells a remover and replacement tapes that compete directly with our two products, and beats us on price on every one of them. We have no affiliate arrangement and earn nothing from anything on this page. We appear once, at the end, in a labelled section. Every price and ingredient below was read on thehairshop.com on 31 August 2026.

The Hair Shop is not a tape company and does not pretend to be one, which turns out to be the most useful thing to understand about it.

It has been selling hair since 1988, founded by Ryan Tokko, and it now runs retail stores in Los Angeles, Orange County, New York and Houston alongside an academy that teaches in salons across the country. It sells strand-by-strand methods, three kinds of weft, two tape-in systems, ready-to-wear hair, and a forty-six item catalogue of tools and supplies. Tape is one row in a wide spreadsheet.

That matters both ways. It means the tape SKUs are designed around the brand's own extensions rather than as general-purpose consumables, and it means a stylist can equip an entire chair, across six methods, from one account at published prices. This page reviews the tape-relevant part of that range on its own terms. Ours appears once, near the end.

What we judged, and what we could not

We came to this range as tape specialists, which shapes what we looked at: whether the remover is fit for routine tape-in work, whether the tape SKUs stand up on their own or only make sense attached to the brand's own hair, and what a full-range supplier gives you that a four-SKU company cannot. We have not installed The Hair Shop hair, and we have run no laboratory test of adhesion, residue or wear on anything here.

Read on thehairshop.com, 31 August 2026. Every price here is publicly displayed with no account required. Per-unit figures are our arithmetic from the published price and count, shown so you can check them. Several items were marked out of stock at the time of reading, and most product pages carry a final sale marking.

1. The Hair Shop Tape-in Remover

The cheapest published remover in this category, with a full ingredient listAbout $2.79/oz

3.4 fl oz / 100ml · $9.50 · about $2.79 an ounce · needle-nose applicator · alcohol and mineral oil

This is the product a tape specialist has to take seriously, and it is cheaper than ours by a factor of more than two an ounce.

The published ingredient list is Isopropyl Alcohol, Propylene Glycol, Panthenol, Water, Mineral Oil, Fragrance and Blue 1. That is a full INCI on a $9.50 bottle, which is more than most of this category manages at any price. Isopropyl alcohol leads, so the solvent action is alcohol. Propylene glycol is a humectant and co-solvent, panthenol is a conditioner, and mineral oil is an occlusive that does not evaporate.

The claim we would want to test is the workflow one. The page states that their special solution requires no cleaning before re-taping or reapplying extensions, and the directions add that you should let the extensions and the client's natural hair dry before re-taping. We reproduce that as the brand's claim because we have not tested it. What we would say plainly is that mineral oil is not a solvent that flashes off — it is an emollient that stays where you put it — so a hybrid is a different proposition from a purely alcohol remover, and if you are re-tabbing in the same appointment that is the variable to watch on your own first head. A tab pressed onto a hair shaft carrying any residual oil is a tab that will let go early.

What it does well

  • $9.50 for 3.4 fl oz, about $2.79 an ounce, against our $6.25
  • A complete published ingredient list on a sub-$10 bottle
  • Needle-nose applicator places solvent at the bond rather than over a panel
  • Priced publicly with no account required

Where it loses

It contains mineral oil, which is an occlusive rather than an evaporating solvent, so the no-cleaning-before-re-taping claim is one we would verify on your own first head before booking a same-appointment re-tab around it. No yield figure is published, so there is no honest way to work out a cost per removal, and no wear or performance claim is made at all.

Verdict. Cheap, honestly labelled and well packaged. The mineral oil is the open question, and the brand's own no-cleaning claim is the thing to check rather than assume.

2. The Hair Shop the tape range — Smart Tabs Tape, Single Sided Tape and Skinweft Tape

Re-tabbing The Hair Shop extensions specificallyAbout $0.19 a tab

Smart Tabs Tape 60 tabs $11.50 · Single Sided Tape 60 tabs 4cm x 0.9cm $11.50 · Skinweft Tape 0.5in x 9ft roll $9.50

Three tape SKUs, all cheap, all built around the brand's own extension lines, and that last point is the review.

Smart Tabs Tape is 60 replacement tabs for $11.50, which is about $0.19 a tab. The page describes them as pre-cut to match Smart Tabs extension tabs, with the instruction to remove the brown backing, align the extension tab onto the tape piece and press together. Single Sided Tape is also 60 tabs at $11.50, published at 4cm by 0.9cm and positioned for fine to medium hair on the sides and top layer, where a double-sided sandwich is too much. Skinweft Tape is a different animal: an uncut roll, half an inch by nine feet, $9.50, that you trim to match each Skinweft weft, press with the Pro Tape-in Press and bond with a flat iron at 290F.

The limits are worth being precise about. Two of the three are described in terms of the brand's own extensions rather than as universal consumables. No wear duration is published on any of them, where Bellami states 4-10 weeks and Walker states 4-6. No adhesive grade is stated. And the Single Sided Tape is published at 4cm by 0.9cm rather than the 4cm by 0.8cm that Big Kizzy, Bellami and Walker all converge on — a tenth of a millimetre wider, which is nothing on most wefts and worth knowing if you are matching an existing bond footprint.

What it does well

  • About $0.19 a tab, against our $0.75
  • A single-sided option at the same price as the double-sided one
  • An uncut roll for cutting bespoke lengths, at $9.50
  • Every price public with no account

Where it loses

No wear-duration claim and no adhesive grade published on any of the three, so there is nothing to book a move-up cycle against. Two of the three are described specifically for the brand's own Smart Tabs and Skinweft extensions rather than as universal tabs, and the Single Sided Tape at 4cm x 0.9cm is marginally off the 0.8cm the rest of the category uses.

Verdict. Very good value and clearly designed for their own hair. If you install their extensions this is the obvious re-tab; if you do not, the case is weaker than the price suggests.

3. The Hair Shop Pro Tape-in Press and the Smart Tabs Pro Kit

Getting the press right, which is the step most installs get wrong

Pro Tape-in Press $43.50, patented US D794,248 S · Smart Tabs Pro Kit $147.00, seven items

Pressure-sensitive adhesive builds most of its bond strength from the press, and fingertips generate a fraction of the force required, so a hand-pressed tab bonds unevenly and slips early. That single fact makes a press the most under-bought item in tape-in work.

The Pro Tape-in Press is a stainless steel tool with silicone pads, carrying a US design patent number on the page, built to hold two pieces of extension together and distribute pressure evenly. At $43.50 it is the dearest press in this review — Big Kizzy sells one at $29.99 and Walker sells none at all — and it is sold standalone, which is the right decision. Someone who already owns tape and remover can buy the one thing they are missing.

Both were marked out of stock when we read the pages, and most product pages on the site carry a final sale marking. We take that as a returns condition rather than evidence of anything else — we found no announcement of any change to the business and are not going to imply one — but it is worth checking availability before you plan an order around either.

What it does well

  • A press with a published design patent number, sold standalone at $43.50
  • Stainless steel with silicone pads rather than a plastic clamp
  • A seven-item kit at $147.00 that genuinely covers a starting position

Where it loses

The dearest press in this review at $43.50 against Big Kizzy's $29.99, and both the press and the kit were showing out of stock when we read them. The kit is built around Smart Tabs specifically, so some of its value depends on running the brand's own extensions.

Verdict. The best-specified press here and a well-built kit. Check stock before you plan around either.

4. The Hair Shop the wider catalogue and the Academy

Equipping a chair across six methods from one account

46 tools and supplies from $2.00 to $114.00 · four retail stores · 2-Day Master Class $1,410.00, $1,200 with a pro account

The education is real infrastructure rather than a PDF. The 2-Day Advanced Extension Master Class is listed at $1,410.00 with a stated professional rate of $1,200.00 for account holders, and it runs at the company's own Hollywood, New York and Houston locations as well as in host salons across the country. A one-day Weft Master Class runs at $705.00, $600.00 for professionals.

The detail we would single out is that the professional discount is published. You can see both numbers and work out that a pro account is worth $210 on that class before you apply for one. Bellami runs a comparable academy and never publishes what its professional discount is worth. That is a small transparency and it is the sort that a working stylist actually notices.

What it does well

  • Forty-six tools and supplies with published prices and no login
  • Six extension methods supported from one account
  • Hands-on education at published prices, run in salons nationwide
  • The professional discount is published — $1,410 against $1,200

Where it loses

The breadth is the cost as well as the benefit. Tape is one of six methods and gets three SKUs and one remover, with no wear claims and no adhesive grade, where a specialist publishes both. The class at $1,410 is also the dearest in this review.

Verdict. The strongest general extension supplier here, and the weakest tape specification. Buy the tools and the education; check the tape against your own standards.

5. What is not published

Knowing what you still cannot find out

The gaps we hit reading the whole catalogue

The Hair Shop publishes more prices than anyone else in this review and fewer performance specifications than most, and both facts belong in the same paragraph.

There is no yield figure on either remover. A 3.4 fl oz bottle at $9.50 is excellent value per ounce, and without a stated number of removals nobody can convert that into a cost per head. We publish ours — 4.0 fl oz, about thirty removals, $0.83 a removal — precisely because it is the number a stylist actually budgets against, and we would like to see everyone forced to publish it.

What it does well

  • Every price is public, which is more than most of this category manages
  • Full ingredient lists on both removers

Where it loses

No yield on either remover, no wear duration on any tape SKU, no adhesive grade, and patchy stock on the tape-relevant tools. A buyer can work out what things cost and not what they will do.

Verdict. Transparent about money and quiet about performance. That is the opposite of most of this category and it is only half the information you need.

Who The Hair Shop is actually for

The Hair Shop suits a stylist offering more than one extension method who wants hair, tools, consumables and education on one account at published prices. It suits anyone installing Smart Tabs or Skinweft, where the tape and remover are designed for the product. It suits a tape-only specialist least.

  • Multi-method stylists. Six methods, forty-six tools and a colour ring on one account is a genuinely different proposition from a consumables company.
  • Anyone installing Smart Tabs or Skinweft. The tape is pre-cut or pre-sized for those extensions and the remover is written for them.
  • Anyone who wants hands-on education with a published price and a published professional rate.
  • Less suited to: a tape-only specialist who needs a stated wear duration, an adhesive grade and a yield figure to plan around.

The remover ingredient lists, read properly

The Hair Shop publishes a full INCI on both of its removers, which puts it in a small group. Below is what each states, in the order printed.

ProductPrice and sizePublished ingredientsWhat that means
Tape-in Remover$9.50 / 3.4 fl ozIsopropyl Alcohol, Propylene Glycol, Panthenol, Water, Mineral Oil, Fragrance, Blue 1Alcohol-led with an emollient and a humectant. Not oil-free
D-Bond Gel$9.50 / 3.9 fl ozSD Alcohol 40-B, Water, Isopropyl Myristate, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Fragrance, Aminomethyl PropanolDenatured alcohol thickened into a gel, for Keratip, I-Tip, clear tube and tape-in bonds

Reproduced from the product pages as printed. We have not had either product analysed.

The mineral oil in the Tape-in Remover is the one line worth thinking about. Oil-free removal exists because oil deposited on the hair shaft has to be washed off before a fresh tab will bond, and that wash is the step that turns a forty-minute re-tab into an appointment and a half. The Hair Shop states that its solution requires no cleaning before re-taping. We are reproducing that claim rather than endorsing it, because we have not tested it and because mineral oil does not evaporate. If you are planning a same-appointment re-tab around that claim, prove it on one head first.

What it costs, and the arithmetic

ItemPriceSize or countPer unitThe same job from us
Tape-in Remover$9.503.4 fl oz$2.79 an ounceThe Clean Remover, $25, 4.0 fl oz, $6.25 an ounce
Smart Tabs Tape$11.5060 tabsAbout $0.19 a tabReplacement Tape Tabs, $45, 60 tabs, $0.75 a tab
Single Sided Tape$11.5060 tabs, 4cm x 0.9cmAbout $0.19 a tabWe do not sell a single-sided tab

The Hair Shop is cheaper than us on every directly comparable line, by roughly two and a half times on remover per ounce and roughly four times per tab.

Buying notes

  • Check stock before you plan. The press, the kit and several other tape-relevant items showed out of stock when we read the site, and most pages carry a final sale marking, so treat availability as the constraint rather than price.
  • Match the tape to the extension. Smart Tabs Tape is pre-cut for Smart Tabs and Skinweft Tape is a roll you trim for Skinweft. Neither is presented as a universal tab.
  • Buy the Single Sided Tape for top layers and parts. A slim single-sided tab where the hair is fine is a genuinely better answer than a full sandwich, and at $11.50 for 60 there is no reason not to have a pack.
  • Budget for the press. At $43.50 it is the dearest here, and it is still cheaper than a full head of tabs that slip at week three.

How it compares with what we make

This section is short and at the end on purpose. Leaving it out would be its own kind of dishonesty; running it through the review above would have made the review an advertisement.

They beat us on price on every comparable line. About $0.19 a tab against our $0.75; about $2.79 an ounce of remover against our $6.25. They publish a full ingredient list, as we do. They sell a single-sided tab and a roll, which we do not, and a press on its own, which we also do not. And they sell the hair, the tools, the education and four physical shops, none of which we have any equivalent of. There is no framing that makes those margins disappear.

Two things run our way and both are narrow. Their remover contains mineral oil and ours does not, which matters only if you are re-tabbing in the same appointment — and their own page says no cleaning is needed, so this is a difference to check rather than a settled point. And our tab and our solvent were developed against each other by the same two cosmetologists over about ten years of daily salon use, where theirs is a remover written for two extension lines and a tape written for the same two. If you are installing their hair, their pairing is the matched one and ours is not.

If you are installing Smart Tabs or Skinweft

Buy their tape and their remover. The tape is pre-cut for the extension and the remover is written for it, and both cost a fraction of ours. We would rather you got a clean re-tab than an order from us. What our remover does on other brands

What The Hair Shop does better than us

Price, on everything comparable. About $0.19 a tab against our $0.75, and about $2.79 an ounce of remover against our $6.25. Across a busy book that is thousands of dollars a year, and no amount of talking about matched pairs makes it smaller.

Openness about money. Forty-six tools and supplies with a published price and no account required, a published professional class rate alongside the retail one, and a full ingredient list on both removers. Walker publishes no price at all and Bellami gates its collections. Of everyone in this cluster, The Hair Shop is the easiest company to build a budget from.

Formats we do not make. A single-sided tab at the same price as the double-sided one, an uncut roll for bespoke lengths, and a gel remover for keratin and I-Tip bonds. We sell one double-sided tab and one liquid remover.

Breadth and education. Six extension methods, four retail stores, and hands-on classes running in host salons across the country. We are two cosmetologists in Orem, Utah with four products and a written guide. Those are not the same kind of company and it would be silly to pretend otherwise.

The press. Patented, stainless with silicone pads, and sold on its own at $43.50 for someone who owns everything else. Ours is available only inside a kit, which is a straightforward gap on our side.

What this comparison is based on, and what it is not

This review is based on every relevant page we could open on thehairshop.com on 31 August 2026 — both remover pages with their full ingredient lists, the three tape SKUs, the press, the kit, the tools and accessories collection, the classes collection and the company history. Prices and counts are as published; per-unit figures are our arithmetic from them, shown so they can be checked.

We have not installed The Hair Shop hair and we have run no laboratory test of adhesion, residue, wear or skin response on any product here. The claim that their remover requires no cleaning before re-taping is the brand's, reproduced as a claim and explicitly not verified by us. Where a count, a yield or a wear duration is not published, we have written that rather than estimating it.

The Hair Shop sells a remover and replacement tapes that compete directly with our two products, and beats us on price on every one of them. That conclusion is stated in its own section rather than left implicit. We have no affiliate arrangement with the company and earn nothing from anything on this page.

Questions we get asked

How much is The Hair Shop tape-in remover?

$9.50 for 3.4 fl oz, which is 100ml, working out at about $2.79 an ounce. That price is published on the product page with no account required. The number of removals per bottle is not published, so a cost per removal cannot be calculated from it.

Is The Hair Shop tape-in remover oil-free?

No. The published ingredient list is Isopropyl Alcohol, Propylene Glycol, Panthenol, Water, Mineral Oil, Fragrance and Blue 1. It is alcohol-led with mineral oil in the formula, which makes it a hybrid rather than an oil-free remover. The brand states that no cleaning is required before re-taping; we reproduce that as their claim and have not tested it.

Can I re-tape in the same appointment after using it?

The Hair Shop says yes — the page states their solution requires no cleaning before re-taping or reapplying extensions, and the directions add that you should let the extensions and the natural hair dry first. Because the formula contains mineral oil, which does not evaporate, we would prove that on one head before booking a diary around it.

How much does The Hair Shop tape cost per tab?

Both the Smart Tabs Tape and the Single Sided Tape are $11.50 for 60 tabs, which is about $0.19 a tab. That is our arithmetic from their published price and count. For comparison, our tabs are $45 for 60, which is $0.75 each.

How long does The Hair Shop tape last?

They do not publish a wear duration on any tape SKU, which is unusual — Bellami states 4 to 10 weeks, Walker states 4 to 6, Big Kizzy states 6 to 8 or more. Not publishing a number is arguably the most honest position of the four and it is also the least useful one when you are booking a move-up.

What is D-Bond Gel used for?

Dissolving extension bonds and residue. The page describes it as an alcohol-based solution and lists it for Keratip, I-Tip, clear tube and tape-in extensions. It is $9.50 for 3.9 fl oz and its ingredients are published in full. A gel holds contact where a spray runs, which is why it suits keratin bonds.

Is the Pro Tape-in Press worth $43.50?

If you do not already own a press, yes. Pressure-sensitive adhesive builds most of its bond from the press, and fingertips do not generate enough force, so a hand-pressed tab bonds unevenly and tends to slip early. It is the dearest press in this review — Big Kizzy sells one at $29.99 — and it is stainless with silicone pads and carries a design patent number.

Does The Hair Shop tape work with other brands of extensions?

The Single Sided Tape is described in general terms and is published at 4cm by 0.9cm, which is close to the 4cm by 0.8cm the rest of the category uses. The Smart Tabs Tape is described as pre-cut for Smart Tabs and the Skinweft Tape as sized for Skinweft. None of them is marketed as a universal tab, so check the footprint against your weft.

Does The Hair Shop publish its professional discount?

On the classes, yes, and that is worth noting. The 2-Day Advanced Extension Master Class is listed at $1,410.00 with a stated professional rate of $1,200.00, so you can work out what an account is worth before applying. Bellami runs a comparable academy and never publishes what its professional discount is.

Is The Hair Shop better than Vanity?

On price, on formats, on breadth, on tooling and on education, yes, and we have said so in a dedicated section. Where we differ is narrower: our remover is oil-free where theirs contains mineral oil, and our tab and solvent were developed against each other rather than against a hair line. If you are installing their extensions, buy their consumables.
