How we test tape extension removers

We test removers on four measures taken in a working salon: dwell time to release, full-head removals per bottle, a residue check on the strand, and whether a fresh tab holds on unwashed hair. It is bench-free, observational work by two licensed stylists. It is not laboratory testing, and no ranking on this site should be read as one.

We make and sell a tape extension remover, a tape tab, an application tool and two kits. This is our own method, applied by us, to a category we compete in. Read it as a disclosure of how our rankings were produced rather than as independent verification of them, and reject any conclusion whose stated criterion you do not accept.

Every ranked page on this site links here, because a ranking is only worth what its method is worth. If you are going to let a company that sells a remover tell you which remover is best, you are entitled to know exactly what was measured, on whose hair, by whom, and what was never measured at all.

So this is the method, in full, including the parts that make our own results less impressive than they could be made to look. There is no laboratory behind this site. There is a salon in Orem, Utah, two licensed cosmetologists, roughly ten years of daily removals, and a habit of writing things down.

That is a real evidence base and a limited one. It is very good at answering questions a stylist actually asks in the chair, and it is close to useless for the kind of question that needs an instrument. This page tries to be exact about which is which.

What we actually measure

Everything we rank on reduces to four numbers and one judgement. We chose them because they are the four things that change how an appointment runs, and because a stylist can reproduce all of them without buying equipment.

Dwell time is how long solvent has to sit on a bond before the sandwich separates without force. Coverage is how many full heads a bottle actually does. The residue check is what is left on the hair afterwards. The re-tab test asks the only question that matters commercially: can you press a new tab straight onto that hair, in the same appointment, without shampooing first.

The judgement is hair condition, and we mark it as a judgement rather than a measurement because that is what it is. Two stylists agreeing that a mid-shaft feels dry is a useful signal and it is not a reading.

Four measurements and one judgement. Nothing in this table requires equipment a working stylist does not already own, which is deliberate: a method you cannot reproduce is a method you have to take on faith.

The protocol, step by step

This is what happens on a head that feeds a ranking. It is the same sequence whether the bonds are ours or another brand’s, and the only thing that changes is what gets written in the notes.

  1. Section and inspectPart the head into four, clip up, and note the age of the install, the client's wash schedule and any visible product build. Record whether the bonds are ours or another brand's, because the two do not behave the same.
  2. Apply at the seamPlace solvent along the seam where the two tabs meet, not on the surface of the tab. Start the timer as the solvent touches the bond.
  3. Wait, do not pullLet the solvent work. The stop condition is release under a sideways slide with no traction on the hair. If it does not part, reapply and let the clock keep running.
  4. Separate and recordSlide the sandwich apart, stop the timer, and record the elapsed time and whether it took one application or two.
  5. Comb the strandRun a fine-tooth comb from mid-shaft to root through the section the tab occupied. Record pass, catch or gum.
  6. Re-tab without washingPress a fresh tab sandwich directly onto the unwashed strand and finish the head. Note the time from first bond removed to last bond re-pressed.
  7. Follow up at the move-upSee the same head six to eight weeks later and record any early slip the client reported. This is the only part of the method with a delayed read, and it is the part that decides whether the re-tab test actually passed.

Dwell time, and why the stop condition matters more than the number

Dwell time is timed with a phone timer, started the moment solvent touches the seam and stopped the moment the two halves of the sandwich part under a slide of the fingers with no pull on the hair. If we have to pull, the clock keeps running and we apply again.

That last rule matters more than the number. A remover that separates a bond in fifteen seconds if you tug is not a fifteen-second remover, it is a remover that got help from traction the client's hair paid for. So the stop condition is release without force, and a bond that needs a second application carries the total elapsed time, not the time from the second dose.

We take dwell on the first five bonds of a head and then on five more from the back sections, because the nape bonds on a real client are older, hotter and more product-loaded than the ones at the crown. Averaging across the two groups gives a figure that survives contact with an actual head. Quoting the best of ten does not.

We do not report dwell to the second. The honest resolution of a phone timer held by someone who is also holding a comb is somewhere around five seconds, and the variation between two bonds on the same head is larger than that again. Where a page gives a dwell figure it is rounded, and it is a range wherever the range was real.

Coverage: how the per-removal figure is worked out

Coverage is the least glamorous measurement here and the one that decides what a remover costs you. We count it by using a bottle to the end and writing down how many full heads it did.

A full head, for counting purposes, is thirty sandwiches. That is the number our own tab pack is built around: sixty tabs make thirty sandwiches, which is one head. A client with fine hair and a partial set is not a head. A dense client running sixty bonds is two.

On that definition, a 4.0 fl oz bottle of our own remover does about thirty heads in our salon. That is where the published figure comes from: twenty-five dollars divided by thirty removals is eighty-three cents a removal. Show the arithmetic, and you can check it.

Two honest caveats on that number. It is an average across a mixed book, not a floor: a dense head with heavy product build uses close to double what a fine head uses, so a stylist working exclusively on thick hair will get fewer than thirty. And it is a figure taken with a needle applicator placed at the bond line. The same volume delivered as a mist across a full head goes a great deal further in fewer bonds and does not last as long overall, because most of it lands on hair rather than adhesive.

For competitors we do not run this count unless we have used the product to the end of a bottle ourselves, which we have only done on a handful. Where we have not, the per-ounce price is published instead and labelled as a per-ounce price, because dividing a price by a stated volume is arithmetic and estimating someone else's coverage is invention.

The arithmetic, in the open

$25.00 for 4.0 fl oz. About 30 full-head removals a bottle in our salon, where a full head is 30 sandwiches. $25.00 ÷ 30 = $0.83 a removal, and $25.00 ÷ 4.0 = $6.25 an ounce. The residue check

The residue check is done twice on every removal: once by eye under salon light, once by feel with a fine-tooth comb.

By eye, we are looking for the grey smear that gives a bad removal away, and for hair that has kept the shape of the tab. By feel, the comb is the instrument. A clean strand takes a fine-tooth comb from mid-shaft to root with no catch. A strand with adhesive left on it grabs the comb at the point the tab sat, and it does it consistently, in the same place, on strand after strand.

That comb pass is the closest thing this method has to an objective test, because it either catches or it does not and two people can agree on it without discussing it. We record it as pass, catch, or gum: clean, a detectable grab, or visible adhesive that has to be worked out.

What the comb cannot tell you is whether a microscopic film has been left behind. It has not been weighed and it has not been looked at under magnification. When a page on this site says a removal was residue-free, it means it passed a comb and an eye, and that is a smaller claim than the words might suggest.

The re-tab-without-wash test

This is the test the whole product argument rests on, so it is the one we are hardest on.

The protocol is simple. Remove a full head. Do not shampoo. Do not wipe with anything. Comb through, section, and press a fresh tab sandwich directly onto the hair that has just had solvent on it. Then send the client away and see the same head again at the next move-up, six to eight weeks later.

The failure we are looking for is early slip. If solvent residue or oil is sitting on the strand, the new bond does not build properly and the tab loosens inside the first two weeks. That is a failure the client reports without being asked, which makes it a reliable signal even though we are not the ones observing it day to day.

The reason our remover passes this and an oil-based remover does not is not clever chemistry, it is evaporation. An alcohol, ketone and ester blend flashes off the strand. An oil does not; it stays, and anything you press onto it slides. That is the whole of the mechanism, and it is why the shampoo step exists in every oil-based removal protocol on the market, including the one Walker Tape publishes for C-22, which ends with the instruction to shampoo and rinse.

It is also why this test produces a result you should discount slightly. Any oil-free remover will pass it. It separates a category from a category, not our product from a competitor's, and we say so on every page that leans on it.

What this test does not prove

It separates oil-free removers from oil-based ones, and nothing finer than that. Any oil-free solvent should pass it, our closest competitor’s included. Where a page on this site leans on the re-tab test, it is arguing for a category, not for our bottle. Read the compatibility doctrine

What we have not tested

This is the section that makes the rest of the page usable, and it is longer than most companies would print.

We have no laboratory. Nothing on this site has been through one. We do not own a tensile tester, a force gauge, a conditioning cabinet or a microscope, and we have not commissioned any of them from a third party.

That rules out the measurement that would actually settle most of the arguments in this category: controlled peel adhesion. The industry method for that is PSTC-101, which pulls a tape from a standard panel at a fixed angle and a fixed rate of five millimetres a second under controlled temperature and humidity. We have never run it, on our tape or anyone's. So when a page here says one tab holds harder than another, that is the assessment of two people who have pressed a great many tabs, and it is not a force reading in newtons per width.

We have not run controlled residue analysis. No gravimetric measurement of what is left on the strand, no magnification, no solvent extraction. The comb is the instrument.

We have not tested under controlled conditions of any kind. Salon temperature moves. Humidity moves. Clients arrive with different product on their hair, different sebum, different wash schedules, and we do not control for any of it. What we have instead is volume: several hundred heads a year across a decade, which averages a lot of that noise out and eliminates none of it.

We do not blind anything. We know which product is in our hand. That is the largest single weakness in this method and there is no version of it in which we pretend otherwise. A stylist who has spent ten years developing a remover is not a neutral observer of that remover, and this is a page written by that stylist, on a site that sells it.

We have not tested every product we write about. Where we have not used something ourselves, the page says so and reports only the manufacturer's published specification, marked as a claim. Reproducing a brand's stated six to eight weeks is not the same as verifying six to eight weeks, and we never write it as though it is.

We have not measured skin sensitisation, and we make no allergy claims about anyone's product, ours included. Where we flag an ingredient of concern, such as d-limonene in citrus solvents, we are pointing at a published allergen classification rather than reporting a reaction we have observed.

  • No laboratory, in-house or commissioned. No instrument reading appears anywhere on this site.
  • No controlled tensile or peel adhesion testing to PSTC-101 or any equivalent standard.
  • No gravimetric or microscopic residue analysis. The instrument is a comb.
  • No controlled temperature or humidity. Salon conditions, uncontrolled and unrecorded.
  • No blinding. We always know which product is in hand, and we developed one of them.
  • No numbered log of every removal, so we publish a range rather than a false precision.
  • No dermatological or sensitisation testing on any product, ours or anyone’s.
  • No third-party certification of any kind, including vegan and cruelty-free. We hold none and never imply one.

How a measurement becomes a ranking

None of this produces a score out of ten, because a score out of ten hides the weighting and the weighting is the entire argument.

Instead every ranked page states its criterion at the top, before the list, in enough detail that you can reject it. A page ranking on speed of release ranks differently from a page ranking on gentleness, and both are legitimate. What is not legitimate is a page that ranks on an unstated axis and happens to arrive at the publisher's own product.

Where our product wins, it wins on a stated axis and the page says which one. On axes where we lose we lose in public: we do not make an oil-based remover, we do not make a citrus solvent, we do not make a lace or wig adhesive remover, and we are the most expensive tab and the most expensive remover in this category. Those pages rank other people's products first and we earn nothing from them.

Every product entry on every list carries a mandatory limitation line, ours included. If you find one that does not, it is a bug and we would like to be told about it.

Conflicts of interest, stated

We sell four things: a tape tab, a remover, an application tool and two kits that combine them. Every page that ranks a category we compete in says so at the top, in the first screen, before the list.

We take no affiliate commission on anything we link to and we have no paid arrangement with any brand named on this site. Competitor products are bought at retail like anyone else buys them.

There are no verified customer reviews on this site and no rating markup anywhere on it, because we have not yet collected reviews we can verify. That is written up in full on the reviews page rather than quietly omitted.

If you believe we have described your product unfairly, the correction address is on every page and we will change it.

How often this gets rechecked

Prices, counts and published specifications are rechecked quarterly and the date sits at the top and bottom of each page. Anything sourced to a competitor's own listing carries the date we read it, because listings change without notice and a price from eighteen months ago is a fabrication with a timestamp.

Where a figure could not be verified from a primary source we leave the cell blank rather than estimate it. A blank cell is an admission. An invented figure is a lie that looks like data.

The method itself gets revised when it is wrong. If a measurement here turns out to be unreproducible, or a stop condition turns out to be doing more work than we thought, this page changes and the pages that cite it change with it.

Questions we get asked

Is this laboratory testing?

No. There is no lab behind this site and no page on it reports an instrument reading. Everything here comes from removals performed on paying clients in a salon in Orem, Utah, timed with a phone and assessed with a comb and two pairs of eyes. Where a question needs an instrument to settle it, we say the question is unsettled rather than implying we have settled it.

How many removals is this based on?

Several hundred a year across roughly ten years between two licensed stylists. We have not kept a numbered log of every one, so we do not publish a precise total, because a precise total we cannot produce on request is worse than an honest range.

Why do you not publish peel adhesion figures?

Because we have not measured any. Peel adhesion is measured under standards such as PSTC-101, which specifies a fixed peel angle, a fixed rate of five millimetres a second and controlled conditions. We do not own that equipment and have not commissioned the test. Any claim about relative hold on this site is stylist assessment, and it is labelled as such.

How is dwell time actually timed?

A phone timer, started when the solvent touches the seam and stopped when the sandwich parts without traction on the hair. If a bond needs a second application, the clock keeps running through it. We take ten bonds a head, five at the crown and five at the nape, and we round the result rather than reporting to the second.

Where does the eighty-three cents a removal figure come from?

Twenty-five dollars divided by about thirty full-head removals from a 4.0 fl oz bottle. A full head is defined as thirty sandwiches, which is what sixty tabs make. It is an average across a mixed client book: a dense head uses close to double a fine one, so the figure is a mid-point rather than a guarantee.

Do you test competitors' products the same way?

Only where we have actually used them, and the page says which. For a product we have not run to the end of a bottle we publish the manufacturer's stated specification and the per-ounce price, both marked as such, and we leave coverage blank. Estimating a rival's coverage from a bottle we have not emptied would be inventing a number.

Is the testing blinded?

No. We know which product is in our hand every time, and we developed one of them. That is the largest weakness in this method. It is why every ranked page states its criterion before the list, so you can see the axis that produced the result and discard it if you disagree with the axis.

What does residue-free mean on this site?

It means the strand passed a visual check under salon light and a fine-tooth comb pass from mid-shaft to root with no catch at the tab site. It does not mean a surface has been analysed. A film too thin to catch a comb would not be detected by this method and we have never claimed otherwise.

Why does the re-tab test matter more than the others?

Because it is the one that changes the appointment. If you can press a fresh tab onto unwashed hair, a move-up loses the shampoo, the dry and the wait. If you cannot, it does not matter how fast the release was. It is also the test with the clearest mechanism behind it: an oil-free solvent evaporates off the strand and an oil-based one stays on it.

Does the re-tab test prove your remover is better than everyone's?

No, and we are careful about this. Any oil-free remover should pass it, including Big Kizzy Remover 1, which is also oil-free. The test separates oil-free removers from oil-based ones. It does not separate ours from another oil-free product, and we do not use it as though it does.

How often is any of this rechecked?

Prices and published specifications quarterly, with the read date printed beside each source. The method itself is revised whenever a step turns out not to reproduce. Pages carry both a published date and an updated date so you can see how stale the figures are.

You sell a remover. Why should this method be trusted at all?

Trust it exactly as far as its disclosures let you. We have told you the sample is unblinded, uncontrolled, unlogged and collected by the manufacturer. What we have also done is publish the criterion behind every ranking, print the figures that argue against us, and rank competitors first on the categories where we do not compete. A method you can audit and reject is worth more than a certificate you cannot check.
