The Hair Shop alternatives

By Jaci Finch, licensed cosmetologist (Utah)21 years behind the chairUpdated 2026-08-31

If you are leaving The Hair Shop over the remover, Big Kizzy Remover 1 is the switch: 8 oz at $16.99, about $2.12 an ounce, and oil-free against their alcohol-and-mineral-oil hybrid at about $2.79 an ounce. The trade-off is real. You give up the one account that supplied hair, tools, tape and training together.

We sell a tape tab and a remover that compete with two products on this page, so read it accordingly. The Hair Shop beats us on price per ounce and on range, Big Kizzy beats us on both, and we have said so in the table, in every entry and in a section of its own. We hold no affiliate arrangement with any brand named here and earn nothing from any link except our own. Every third-party figure traces to a page we opened on 31 August 2026 and listed at the foot.

The Hair Shop sells hair. That is the first thing to hold on to, because it explains almost everything about the range and about what happens when you try to leave it.

They carry I-Tip, Keratip, Microtip, Smart Weft, One-Step Weft, Classic Weft, Smart Tabs and Skinweft, plus ready-to-wear pieces, plus a two-day Advanced Extension Master Class listed at $1,410.00. The tape supplies exist to keep their own extension systems in service. That is not a criticism. It is a description of a business model, and for a stylist it buys something genuinely valuable: one purchase order, one account, one delivery, hair and consumables arriving together.

It also costs something, and the cost is specific rather than general. Nothing in the range is optimised for tab-and-solvent work on its own terms. The Smart Tabs Tape is single-sided and precut to Smart Tabs geometry. The Skinweft Tape is an uncut roll you trim by hand. The remover is a hybrid built to serve both. All three are sensible answers to the question The Hair Shop is asking. They are the wrong shape if the question you are now asking is which tab and which solvent, independent of whose hair you install.

This page assumes you have already decided to move at least part of that order elsewhere. What follows is a routing table rather than a ranking, because the right answer differs by reason and on two of the reasons the right answer is not us.

How we decided what replaces what

An alternatives page is only useful if it starts from your reason for leaving rather than from a ranking. So we worked backwards: we listed the five things The Hair Shop actually supplies a stylist - a hybrid remover, precut tape cut to their own extension geometry, an uncut roll, tooling, and hair and training from the same account - and asked what the closest honest substitute is for each. Some of those have a better answer than us. One of them has no answer at all outside The Hair Shop. What we have not done is a controlled laboratory comparison of adhesion, residue or wear, and nothing here should be read as one.

All third-party figures as published on the brands' own product pages and read on 31 August 2026. Per-unit figures are our arithmetic on those published numbers. A blank cell means the brand does not publish the figure and we have not estimated it.

1. Big Kizzy Remover 1 and the tab range

Almost anyone leaving The Hair Shop for supplies rather than hair

Remover 1 oil-free, 8 oz $16.99 or 32 oz $24.99 - tabs from $8.99, counts from 36 to 12,000, three named removers plus four single-name bond removers at $8.99

This is the default answer and it is not close. Big Kizzy is a tape-in supply house that does not sell hair, which makes it the exact inverse of the business you are leaving.

Remover 1 is listed at $16.99 for 8 oz and $24.99 for 32 oz. That is about $2.12 an ounce at the small size and about $0.78 an ounce at the large one. The Hair Shop's remover is $9.50 for 3.4 fl oz, which is about $2.79 an ounce. So the small Big Kizzy bottle is already cheaper per ounce, and the large one is roughly a quarter of the price per ounce. If cost per ounce is your reason for moving, the arithmetic ends there.

The tab range is broader than anything else we have found. Pro Hold and No Show and Classic Blue run 120 tabs at $11.99, which is about $0.10 a tab. Seamless Hold and Original Brown run 60 tabs at $9.99, about $0.17. Extra Hold and Regular Hold run 72 at $15.99, about $0.22. Ultra Stick runs 48 at $10.99. There are single-sided versions of most lines, which matters if you are coming off Smart Tabs, and there are 600 and 12,000 count bulk options if you run a volume book.

Remover 1 is oil-free, so nothing is deposited at the bond site and you can press a fresh tab in the same appointment without a shampoo. That is the same workflow The Hair Shop claims for its hybrid, arrived at by a cleaner route. We will come back to why the hybrid route is not simply worse.

The structural trade-off is inherent to the strategy. A universal solvent is tuned across a family of adhesives rather than against one target, so on a hard-cured bond from a brand it has never met it wants a second application more often. That is a handful of extra ninety-second waits across a head, and it is a small price for a range this cheap and this deep.

What it does well

  • About $0.78 an ounce at the 32 oz size, against The Hair Shop's $2.79
  • Tabs from about $0.10 each in the 120-count lines
  • Single-sided lines available, which matters coming off Smart Tabs
  • Counts from 36 to 12,000, so stock matches actual usage
  • Oil-free, so no shampoo between removal and re-tab
  • Every price published without an account

Where it loses

One remover family serves every adhesive in circulation, so release is a compromise rather than a match, and hard-cured bonds want a second application more often. There is no hair, no ready-to-wear, no academy and no colour matching, so it replaces part of your Hair Shop order and not the whole of it. Bulk counts of 600 and above sit in a drawer for months, and adhesive degrades in heat and humidity.

Verdict. The correct switch for consumables on price, depth and sizing. It does not replace a hair supplier and does not pretend to.

2. Bellami Hair Extension Release Spray and replacement tape

Stylists who want a hair brand and a published ingredient list in one place

Release Spray $12.00, alcohol-based, full INCI published, bottle size not published - Single Sided Replacement Tape $12.00 for 48 tabs at 4cm x 0.8cm - Double Sided Replacement Tape $15.00, count not published

If the thing you actually valued about The Hair Shop was buying hair and supplies from one account, Bellami is the like-for-like move rather than a tape specialist.

The Release Spray is $12.00 and the brand publishes the full ingredient list: isopropyl alcohol, propanediol, neopentyl, glycol diheptanoate, isododecane. No oil in it. The directions are to spray at the bond site, wait three to five seconds and manipulate the tape until it loosens, and the same bottle is stated to work on K-Tip bonds. At twelve dollars that is the cheapest published-formulation oil-free remover we are aware of anywhere in the category, and it is cheaper than ours by more than half.

The one thing you cannot do with it is arithmetic. Bellami does not publish the bottle volume, so there is no honest cost per ounce and no cost per removal. We have left those cells blank rather than guess, and you should treat any site that fills them in as having guessed.

The tabs are the standard 4cm by 0.8cm footprint. Single Sided is $12.00 for 48 tabs, which is exactly $0.25 a tab. Double Sided is $15.00 and the count is not published, so again no per-tab figure. The adhesive is described as acrylic for hold with a polyurethane carrier for flexibility, and the stated hold is four to ten weeks. That is a manufacturer claim rather than a tested result.

The catch for a price-sensitive buyer is that Bellami gates its collection pages behind a professional login, so browsing the range without an account is awkward even though individual product pages show retail. The stylist discount percentage is never published.

What it does well

  • $12.00 for an oil-free remover with the full INCI published
  • Works on tape-in and K-Tip bonds from one bottle
  • Tabs at the standard 4cm x 0.8cm, so they fit any weft
  • Single Sided at exactly $0.25 a tab from a published count
  • Hair, tabs, solvent and an academy from one account

Where it loses

Bottle volume is not published, so cost per ounce and cost per removal cannot be worked out at all, and the double-sided tab count is missing too. Collection pages are gated behind a pro login and the stylist discount is never disclosed. The four to ten week hold figure is positioning rather than a test result.

Verdict. The closest one-account replacement, and the cheapest oil-free bottle with a published formulation. Buy it if you want hair and supplies together.

3. Vanity The Clean Remover and Replacement Tape Tabs

Stylists who want the solvent matched to the tab and will pay for itAbout $0.83

The Clean Remover $25, 4.0 fl oz, oil-free, about 30 removals, about $0.83 a removal - Replacement Tape Tabs $45 for 60, $0.75 a tab, 30 sandwiches

We are the most expensive tab and the most expensive remover on this page and there is no useful way to soften that. $6.25 an ounce against The Hair Shop's $2.79 and Big Kizzy's $0.78 at the 32 oz size. $0.75 a tab against $0.10 to $0.25. If your reason for leaving The Hair Shop is cost, stop here and buy Big Kizzy.

What the premium buys is narrow. Our tab and our solvent were developed against each other by Jaci Finch and Tru Eastman over roughly ten years of daily salon use, adjusting one when the other misbehaved. The solvent is not asked to release every adhesive in circulation. It is asked to release ours. In our chair that shows up as more bonds opening on the first application, which means fewer repeat waits across a full head. That is an observation from our own chair rather than a measured result and you should hold it as one.

The formulation is isopropyl alcohol, methyl ethyl ketone, ethyl acetate and deionised water. No oil at all, which is the point of the next section. Nothing is deposited, so removal and re-tab collapse into one appointment with no shampoo between them. Bellami's spray and Big Kizzy Remover 1 both do that too. We are not unique on the property, only on the pairing.

The arithmetic we do publish is the one most brands skip. 4.0 fl oz gives about 30 removals at $25, which is about $0.83 a removal. The Hair Shop states approximately three full heads per bottle, Bellami does not publish a volume, and Big Kizzy does not publish a removals-per-bottle figure. Those units are not interchangeable and we are not going to pretend they are, so compare on price per ounce, where we lose.

One more thing worth saying plainly to a Hair Shop customer. Our tabs are a standard double-sided footprint. If the hair on your client's head is Smart Tabs, the extension already carries its own tab and wants a single-sided replacement, so our double-sided tab is the wrong product for that specific weft. Big Kizzy and Bellami both sell single-sided lines. We do not.

What it does well

  • Tab and solvent engineered against each other rather than across a category
  • Oil-free, so removal and re-tab happen in one appointment
  • About $0.83 a removal, published with the arithmetic
  • Full formulation published - IPA, MEK, ethyl acetate, deionised water
  • 60 tabs is exactly one full head, so there is no part-pack to store
  • Supply is independent of whichever hair brand you install

Where it loses

The most expensive tab and remover on this page by a wide margin - $0.75 a tab against $0.10 to $0.25, and $6.25 an ounce against $0.78 to $2.79. One tab, one size, double-sided only, so there is no single-sided option for a Smart Tabs weft and no mini format. Four SKUs, no hair, no ready-to-wear, no academy, no colour matching, and zero verified customer reviews published to date. The matched-pair advantage disappears entirely on anyone else's tape.

Verdict. Worth the premium only if you are running our tape and want first-pass release. On cost alone, three products on this page beat us.

4. What no tape specialist can replace

Deciding whether to move the whole order or only part of it

Hair, colour matching, ready-to-wear, a two-day master class listed at $1,410.00, and one account for all of it

It is worth being blunt about the half of The Hair Shop that none of the alternatives above touch.

They sell hair in eight or nine construction types. They sell ready-to-wear pieces for the client who is not ready for a bonded install. They run an Academy, and the two-day Advanced Extension Master Class is listed at $1,410.00 across several US cities. They match colour. All of that arrives on one invoice with your consumables.

Big Kizzy sells none of it. We sell none of it either - four SKUs and a written guide is our entire catalogue. If what you actually wanted from a supplier is a single relationship covering hair, education and supplies, then the honest comparison is not against a tape specialist at all. It is against Bellami, Babe or Donna Bella, all of which run that model, and the question becomes whose hair and whose education you prefer.

There is a real argument on the other side and we would rather make it carefully than loudly. Buying consumables from the company that sells you hair means your tab and solvent supply is tied to that company's continued trading in your market. Over the past year two brands in this category have stopped serving US customers: hairtalk's US site is now a landing page with three outbound links, and Glam Seamless is a Shopify placeholder whose product feed returns HTTP 401. Stylists in both cases were left with installed hair and no source for replacement tabs or solvent from that brand.

That is not an argument that The Hair Shop is going anywhere. We have no evidence of that and would not publish a hint of it. It is an argument about concentration. Splitting the order - hair from whoever you rate, tabs and solvent from a specialist - costs you one extra account and buys you a supply line that does not depend on any one hair brand's US strategy.

What it does well

  • One account, one invoice, one delivery for hair and supplies
  • Colour matching and ready-to-wear that no consumables brand offers
  • An academy with published dates and a published price

Where it loses

Consumable supply is tied to a hair company's trading position in your market, and two brands in this category have already withdrawn from US customers mid-cycle. Nothing in the range is designed for tab-and-solvent work on its own terms, so the tape formats follow their extension geometry rather than the industry standard.

Verdict. Split the order. Keep buying hair wherever you rate the hair, and buy consumables from somebody whose only business is consumables.

You should stay with The Hair Shop if

Most alternatives pages skip this part because it costs them the sale. It is the most useful section on the page, so here it is first.

  • You install Smart Tabs. The Smart Tabs Tape is precut to that extension's geometry and single-sided, because the extension already carries its own tab. Nothing on the open market is cut to that shape. Buying a standard 4cm by 0.8cm double-sided tab and trimming it is a worse job than buying the tape made for it at $11.50 for 60.
  • You install Skinweft. The Skinweft Tape is a 0.5 inch by 9 foot uncut roll at $9.50 that you trim to each piece, and the stated method includes a flat iron at 290F to set the bond. That is a specific procedure tied to a specific product, and a precut tab does not do the same job.
  • You buy your hair there. If the hair is right for your clients, moving the consumables to save a few dollars an ounce while keeping the hair account open adds a supplier for a small saving. Work out the actual annual figure before you do it.
  • You are inside their education. The Academy schedule, the master class at $1,410.00 and the product line are one system. Fragmenting the supplies while you are still learning the method is the wrong order to do things in.
  • You value the needle-nose applicator. It is a genuinely good delivery format - precise at the bond, no overspray onto the scalp, and it lets you work along a row without soaking hair you have not reached yet.

The hybrid base, explained properly

This is the technically interesting thing about The Hair Shop remover and it deserves better than being written up as a compromise, because it is not one. It is a design choice with a real advantage and a real cost.

The published ingredient list is isopropyl alcohol, propylene glycol, panthenol, water, mineral oil, fragrance and Blue 1. So there is an alcohol carrier doing the solvent work and there is mineral oil in the formula alongside it. That makes it a hybrid rather than either a straight alcohol solvent or a straight oil-based one.

What the oil buys is meaningful. Alcohol flashes off fast, which is what lets an oil-free product support same-day re-tabbing, but fast evaporation also means short working time and a drying, stripping feel on the scalp and along the shaft. A small oil fraction slows the flash-off, keeps the solvent in contact with the adhesive for longer, and lubricates the interface so the tab slides off rather than crumbling and stranding gum down the hair. On a long, hard-cured bond that is genuinely gentler than a pure alcohol product, and the panthenol in the formula points at the same intention.

What the oil costs is equally specific. Pressure-sensitive adhesive builds its bond from clean, dry contact under pressure. Any oil left at the bonding site is the direct enemy of that. The brand's own answer is that its solution requires no cleaning before re-taping or reapplying, which is a claim we are reproducing rather than confirming - we have run no laboratory test on residue and nobody else has published one either. What we would say from the chair is that the risk is not theoretical. If a re-tab slips early after a hybrid removal, residual oil at the interface is the first thing to suspect, and a clarifying wash removes the doubt entirely at the cost of the twenty minutes you were trying to save.

So the honest framing is a trade, not a defect. A hybrid is kinder on the hair during the removal and asks you to trust the deposit afterwards. An oil-free solvent is harsher during the removal and leaves nothing to trust. Which one is correct depends on whether you are re-tabbing in the same appointment or sending the client away, and on whether the hair is dry enough that stripping it matters more than a slipped tab.

If you re-tab in the same appointment

Choose an oil-free solvent and remove the variable. Bellami's Release Spray at $12.00 and Big Kizzy Remover 1 at $16.99 both do that job for less than ours does, and we would rather you had a clean bond than a Vanity order. More on removal method in The Journal

What replaces Smart Tabs Tape and Skinweft Tape

This is where a lot of switching advice quietly goes wrong, so it is worth being precise. The Hair Shop's two tapes are not interchangeable with each other and neither is a standard tab.

  • Smart Tabs Tape is $11.50 for 60 pieces, precut to Smart Tabs sizing, and single-sided. The extension already has its own tab, so you are adding one adhesive face, not sandwiching. At $11.50 for 60 that is about $0.19 a piece, which is competitive, and the closest open-market substitute is a single-sided line rather than a double-sided tab.
  • Skinweft Tape is $9.50 for a 0.5 inch by 9 foot uncut roll. You trim each piece to the weft. The instruction includes pressing with their Pro Tape-In Press and then setting the bond with a flat iron at 290F. A precut tab does not replicate that, and if you want a roll format Big Kizzy sell tape rolls at $14.99 in several adhesive grades, including an Extra Hold single-sided roll for tape wefts at $19.99.
  • A standard double-sided tab - ours, Big Kizzy's, Bellami's - is 4cm by 0.8cm and is designed to sandwich two wefts around a section of natural hair. That is a different geometry from either Hair Shop product, and using it on a Smart Tab weft means you are stacking adhesive on adhesive.
  • Practical consequence: if your existing clients are wearing Smart Tabs or Skinweft, switching your consumables mid-cycle changes the bond behaviour on hair that was installed to a different specification. Finish the cycle on the tape that matches, and change supplier at the point where the hair itself changes.

Switching without stranding a client mid-cycle

  1. Separate the two decisionsWhere you buy hair and where you buy consumables are different questions with different answers. Most people leaving The Hair Shop only need to move one of them, and moving both at once makes it impossible to tell which change caused whatever happens next.
  2. Work out your real annual spendA full head is 30 sandwiches, so 60 tabs. Multiply by heads per year. At $0.10 a tab a hundred heads is $600; at $0.19 it is $1,140; at $0.75 it is $4,500. Then do the same for solvent on price per ounce. The number that comes out is the honest size of the decision, and for a lot of chairs it is smaller than it feels.
  3. Match geometry before you match priceCheck whether the hair already on your clients' heads takes a single-sided or a double-sided tab, and at what size. A cheaper tab of the wrong format is not cheaper.
  4. Buy one pack and run it across three headsAdhesive degrades in heat and humidity, and a 600-count box that turns out to be wrong for your book is dead money. Buy the smallest count on offer, run it properly, and only then commit stock.
  5. Change the solvent lastIf you change the tab and the solvent in the same week and a bond fails, you have learned nothing. Move the tab first, keep the remover you know, and change it once the tab is settled.

The flammability point, which applies to all of these

Every remover on this page is alcohol-carried, ours included, and every one of them is flammable. Keep them away from heat, sparks and open flame, work in a ventilated space, and cap the bottle between bonds rather than leaving it open on the station. The hybrid does not change that - isopropyl alcohol is still the first ingredient on the list. Walker's C-22, the citrus solvent people reach for on genuinely hardened bonds, carries the same warnings on the manufacturer's own page: flammable, keep away from heat, use in a well-ventilated area, patch test first. This is not a competitive point in any direction. It is the price of a solvent that works fast.

What The Hair Shop does better than us

Price per ounce. $9.50 for 3.4 fl oz is about $2.79 an ounce against our $6.25. They are less than half our price for a bottle that does the same job on their own systems, and they publish the full ingredient list alongside it, which we sometimes talk as though only we do. We do not. They do it, Bellami does it, and we should stop implying otherwise.

Tape cut to the extension. Precut Smart Tabs Tape at $11.50 for 60 and a trimmable Skinweft roll at $9.50 are two formats engineered against two specific extension geometries. We sell one double-sided tab in one size. On a Smart Tabs weft their product is simply the right one and ours is not.

Scope. Hair in eight or nine construction types, ready-to-wear, colour matching, tooling and an Academy with a two-day master class listed at $1,410.00. Our entire catalogue is four SKUs and a written guide, and we do not run education of any kind.

The kit. Their Smart Tabs Pro Kit at $147.00 contains a press, a pin tail comb, tape, remover, metallic shark clips, prong clips and a case. Our Complete System at $95 contains a remover, 60 tabs, an application tool and a written guide. Theirs is dearer and it is also more tooling.

The applicator. A needle-nose tip that also doubles as a separator is a better delivery format than a plain flip cap, and it is a small piece of product design we have not matched.

What this comparison is based on, and what it is not

This page rests on the prices, counts, dimensions and ingredient lists published on each brand's own product pages, all opened on 31 August 2026 and listed in full below, plus our own experience installing and removing tape-in extensions in a working salon in Orem, Utah. Where we have divided a price by a published volume or count, the arithmetic is shown so you can check it. Where a brand does not publish a figure, the cell is blank.

We have run no laboratory test of adhesion, residue, wear duration or solvent behaviour on any product named here, and nothing on this page should be read as one. Every wear-duration figure, every residue claim and every statement about how many heads a bottle covers is the manufacturer's own claim reproduced as a claim. Our observation that a matched tab and solvent release on the first application more often is an observation from our own chair, not a measured result.

We sell a competing tab and a competing remover, and on this page we are the most expensive option in both categories. Big Kizzy beats us on price and on range, Bellami beats us on the price of an oil-free bottle, and The Hair Shop beats us on price per ounce and on scope. Those conclusions are in the table, in the entries and in a section of their own. We hold no affiliate arrangement with any brand named here and earn nothing from any link except our own.

Questions we get asked

What is the best alternative to The Hair Shop tape-in remover?

Big Kizzy Remover 1 for cost - $16.99 for 8 oz or $24.99 for 32 oz, which is about $2.12 and about $0.78 an ounce against The Hair Shop's $2.79. Bellami's Release Spray at $12.00 if you want the cheapest oil-free bottle with a published ingredient list, although Bellami does not publish the volume so you cannot work out a per-ounce figure.

Is The Hair Shop remover oil-free?

No. The published ingredient list includes mineral oil alongside isopropyl alcohol, propylene glycol, panthenol and water, which makes it a hybrid rather than an oil-free product. The brand states that its solution requires no cleaning before re-taping. That is their claim and we have not tested it.

How much is The Hair Shop tape-in remover?

$9.50 for 3.4 fl oz, which is 100ml, working out at about $2.79 an ounce. The listing states approximately three full heads per bottle and describes a needle-nose applicator tip that also separates the pieces. It is marked as a final sale item.

Can I use standard tape tabs on Smart Tabs extensions?

Not as a like-for-like. Smart Tabs extensions carry their own tab, so the replacement tape is single-sided and precut to that geometry at $11.50 for 60. A standard 4cm by 0.8cm double-sided tab is designed to sandwich two wefts around natural hair, which is a different job. If you need an open-market substitute, look at single-sided lines rather than double-sided tabs.

What replaces Skinweft Tape?

A tape roll rather than a tab. Skinweft Tape is a 0.5 inch by 9 foot uncut roll at $9.50 that you trim per piece. Big Kizzy sell tape rolls at $14.99 in several adhesive grades and an Extra Hold single-sided roll for tape wefts at $19.99. The bonding method differs, so read the instructions rather than assuming they behave the same.

Is Vanity cheaper than The Hair Shop?

No, and it is not close. Our remover is $6.25 an ounce against their $2.79, and our tabs are $0.75 each against about $0.19 for Smart Tabs Tape. We are the most expensive tab and remover in this category. The only thing our price buys is a solvent built specifically against our own adhesive.

Does The Hair Shop remover leave residue?

The brand describes it as a minimal residue formula and states no cleaning is needed before re-taping. Mineral oil is in the published ingredient list, so some oil is present by design. We have run no laboratory test and nobody has published one, so treat both the claim and any counter-claim as unproven. From the chair, if a fresh tab slips early after a hybrid removal, residual oil at the interface is the first thing worth ruling out.

Why would anyone choose a hybrid remover over an oil-free one?

Because a small oil fraction slows the alcohol flashing off, which gives longer working contact with the adhesive and lubricates the interface so the tab slides rather than crumbling and stranding gum down the shaft. On dry hair or a long hard-cured bond that is genuinely gentler. The cost is that you have to trust the deposit if you re-tab immediately.

Can I buy The Hair Shop supplies without an account?

Yes. Prices for the Tape-in Remover, Smart Tabs Tape, Skinweft Tape and the Smart Tabs Pro Kit are all shown publicly on the product pages. That is worth noting because several professional brands in this category, including Babe and Hotheads, do not publish tape prices at all.

How many tape tabs do I need for a full head?

Sixty, which is thirty sandwiches. That is why our pack is 60 and why Big Kizzy's 60 and 120 counts are the practical sizes. A 48-count pack is 24 sandwiches and short of a head, so check the count rather than the pack price.

Does The Hair Shop run training?

Yes. Their Academy lists a two-day Advanced Extension Master Class at $1,410.00 across several US cities. Neither Big Kizzy nor we run anything comparable. If education is part of what you are buying from a supplier, that is a genuine reason to stay, and Bellami runs an academy too.

Should I move my hair supplier and my tape supplier at the same time?

No. Change one thing at a time. If a bond fails after you have changed the hair, the tab and the solvent in the same month, you cannot tell which one caused it. Move the consumables first, keep the hair account, and reassess after three or four full heads.

Is buying tape from a hair company a risk?

It concentrates your supply. Two brands in this category have stopped serving US customers in the past year - hairtalk's US site is now a landing page with three outbound links, and Glam Seamless is a Shopify placeholder whose product feed returns HTTP 401. In both cases stylists were left with installed hair and no source for tabs or solvent from that brand. That is not a prediction about anyone else. It is an argument for keeping consumables on a separate supply line.
