Of the household options, oil is the one an official body actually recommends: the National Capital Poison Center advises soaking skin in vegetable or mineral oil to release dried glue. It is slow, messy, and leaves residue you must wash out before re-taping. Goo Gone makes no hair-extension product, and calls its original range skin irritants.
We make a tape-in remover, so we have an obvious interest in what you conclude about the free alternative in your kitchen. We have tried to write this as though we did not. Our product appears once, near the end, in a section marked as such, and where the evidence favours the household option we have said so.
Start with the thing that sends most people here, because it is a mistake and it is worth two minutes of your time.
There is no Goo Gone hair extension remover. We opened all six category pages on googone.com and all twenty-four product pages behind them. The word hair appears on exactly one of the twenty-four, and only about chewing gum and body hair under athletic tape. The words extension and scalp appear nowhere. What almost certainly created the myth is a name collision: GOO GOO Hair, at googoohair.com, is an unrelated Remy human-hair extension brand that does sell a tape-in glue remover. If someone told you to use Goo Gone on your extensions, there is a fair chance they meant the other one.
Goo Gone's manufacturer has also already answered the skin half of the question in public. Their master FAQ, under a heading titled Skin and Hair, says in full: our Goo Gone Bandage & Adhesive Remover can be used on skin, our original products are skin irritants. That is Weiman describing its own flagship range, and it needs no embellishment from us. Notice what it does not do. It answers skin and says nothing whatsoever about hair.
So this is a review of the household shelf by someone who has spent twenty-one years removing tape-ins and who sells a remover. Oil comes out best, on a poison centre's advice rather than ours. We say where the free option is good enough, and where the evidence runs out. There is more of that second category than you would expect.
What we judged, and what nobody has ever measured
We judged each of these on what the manufacturer or a health authority actually says about putting it on a body, what it leaves behind, how fast it works on an eight-week bond, and how badly it goes wrong if it lands somewhere you did not aim. What we could not judge is the thing everyone wants judged. No government health agency, poison-control centre or dermatology body we could find publishes anything about solvents applied to the scalp, or about tape-in adhesive removal. Nobody official has evaluated this, and that absence shapes the whole page.

1. Household mineral, vegetable and coconut oil
Baby oil, olive oil, coconut oil, petroleum jelly · already in the house · free
We sell an oil-free remover and oil is still the household option we would put first, because it is the only one here with an official body behind it. The National Capital Poison Center, writing about nail glue removers, gives this as its own advice for adhesive stuck to skin: soak the skin in vegetable or mineral oil or apply petroleum jelly, then gently check if you can remove loosened dried glue. Its baby oil article adds that a small amount can be used in the hair to keep it smoother, and that cooking oils can also be used on the skin safely.
The cost is time and what happens next. Oil does not dissolve a pressure-sensitive adhesive, it swells and plasticises it, so the tab tends to fail as two soft halves rather than one clean release. Nothing new will stick until that has been shampooed out. On a removal-only appointment that costs nothing. On a move-up it is the whole problem.
What it does well

Where it loses
Slow, and the messiest thing here. It softens the bond rather than releasing it, so everything it touches needs a clarifying wash before you re-tape, which usually costs you the appointment. Poison Control's real warning about these liquids is ingestion, not skin: they easily can be breathed into someone's lungs when swallowed, which can cause pneumonia and death.
Verdict. At home, unhurried, not re-taping today, oil is a sound and officially endorsed choice. In a chair with a client booked behind you it is the wrong tool for the schedule, not the wrong tool for the head.
2. Household rubbing alcohol, 70% isopropyl
70% isopropyl alcohol · about $2-4 for 16 fl oz · evaporates completely
This is the honest one for us to write. Our Clean Remover is isopropyl alcohol with methyl ethyl ketone, ethyl acetate and deionised water. Strip the ketone and the ester and you have a weaker version of the bottle in your bathroom cabinet, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
Poison Control is direct: when used in small amounts on the skin, rubbing alcohol is safe, although minor irritation and dryness are possible. That is the mildest verdict any authority on this page gives to anything. The WHO and ILO safety card records the skin symptom as dry skin and adds, under long-term or repeated exposure, that repeated or prolonged contact may cause dryness and cracking. Note the scope: repeated occupational exposure, not one removal.
What it does well
- Poison Control says small amounts on skin are safe, with dryness the downside
- Evaporates completely, so nothing is deposited that must be shampooed out
- A few dollars, and already in most homes
- Chemically the closest household analogue to an oil-free remover
Where it loses
It is 30 percent water, so it is slower and weaker than anything sold for the job, and the temptation with a slow solvent is to keep pulling. It is highly flammable with explosive vapour and air mixtures, so it cannot be used near an iron, a dryer or a candle. Repeated contact causes dryness and cracking, which is a real occupational point for a stylist doing this all week.
Verdict. The best household choice if you need to re-tape the same day, because it leaves nothing behind. Expect three or four times the dwell time of a product built for the job.
3. Goo Gone the range, and the one product meant for a body
Bandage & Adhesive Remover $18.99 / 8 fl oz, Safe Surfaces: Skin · Original 80-95% petroleum distillates, signal word Danger
There are two Goo Gones and the difference is the point. The Bandage & Adhesive Remover, sold as Goo Gone For Use On Skin, is $18.99 for eight fluid ounces, described by Weiman as alcohol free and sting free, and it is the only one of the twenty-four products whose Safe Surfaces field lists a body tissue. That field reads, in full: Skin. Its safety data sheet backs the difference up. Where Goo Gone Original carries the signal word Danger, an aspiration hazard and a composition of 80 to 95 percent petroleum distillates plus 3 to 5 percent d-limonene, the skin product carries the signal word Warning, skin sensitisation only, and a flammability line reading Not flammable.
The bottle in your utility drawer is the other one. Its sheet states the identified use as Cleaning product and instructs, under handling, to avoid direct contact with the product. Its Safe Surfaces field lists carpet, wood, stone, glass, fabric, metals, plastics and hard vinyl; the Automotive Spray Gel lists glass, metals and plastics. Not one of the twenty-four lists hair. Skin and hair are not excluded from those lists so much as never contemplated in them.
Two corrections, because being wrong in our own favour would be worse than saying nothing. These products are not highly flammable: Original's flash point is above 200F, and Spray Gel and Pro-Power sit at 185F with the sheet word Combustible. And Goo Gone Original's own sheet says that for skin irritation, the classification criteria are not met. The consumer FAQ calls the range skin irritants; the regulatory document declines to classify it as one. Both statements are Weiman's and we report both.
What it does well
- One product genuinely made for skin, with a milder sheet: Warning, and Not flammable
- Full ingredient disclosure published for the Original, with a Function column
- A safety data sheet per product, openly published on the maker's own site
- Less flammable than rubbing alcohol or acetone
Where it loses
No product in the range lists hair as a safe surface, the identified use on the sheets is Cleaning product, and the maker's own FAQ calls the original range skin irritants. Even the skin SKU is scoped to bandages, medical tape, athletic tape and gum, with the words extension and scalp absent from its page entirely, so using it on a tape-in bond means going outside everything its maker has tested or claimed.
Verdict. Excellent at taking a price sticker off a picture frame. Wrong product and wrong surface for a tape-in, and the company that makes it has said so more plainly than we could.
4. GOO GOO Hair Glue Remover
$19.99 · 30 ml · Citrus or Sea Salt Scent · no ingredients published
This is the other half of the name collision and it deserves a fair entry. GOO GOO Hair is a Remy human-hair extension brand with no connection to Weiman's household cleaner, and it makes a solvent for its own adhesive: $19.99 for 30 ml in a citrus or sea salt scent, sold for tape-ins, lace glue and toupee systems. Its directions are specific in a way we like. Drop the remover on the tape, let it sit about a minute, then separate the pieces with your fingers. A published dwell time is more than most of this category offers, and the brand's own instructions then tell you to shampoo both your hair and the extensions one to two times to remove any solvent residue.
What it does well
- Made by an extension brand for extension adhesive, which is the right category
- Publishes a dwell time, about a minute, where most rivals publish none
- Clears up the confusion at the centre of this page
Where it loses
No ingredient list and no base disclosed, so a client with a sensitivity has nothing to check. Thirty millilitres is roughly a single fluid ounce for $19.99, expensive per ounce against almost everything here. And the brand's own instructions require one to two shampoos afterwards, so this is not a same-appointment re-tape either.
Verdict. A legitimate purpose-made remover in a small bottle with nothing disclosed about what is in it. Worth knowing it exists, mostly so you stop searching for a Goo Gone product that does not.
5. Household peanut butter, and the kitchen remedies with nothing behind them
Vegetable oil, protein and sugar · already in the cupboard · free
Peanut butter turns up on every listicle about adhesive in hair, and we could not find a single authoritative source on it in either direction. The searchable evidence base is retail how-to pages citing each other, and that is not evidence. The honest read is that whatever it does, it does because of the oil in it, and the oil case is made better by a bottle of olive oil that does not also deposit protein and sugar into a panel you then have to wash twice. On a client there is a further reason to skip it: a peanut allergy is a risk you have introduced for no measurable benefit, and you often will not know until afterwards.
What it does well
- Contains vegetable oil, the ingredient doing the work in the option ranked first
- Free, in the cupboard, and harmless to the hair fibre itself
Where it loses
No authoritative source supports it as an adhesive remover, and we will not invent one. It adds protein, sugar and solids to a panel that already needs washing, for no benefit plain oil does not deliver more cleanly, and on a client it introduces an allergen you may not know about.
Verdict. Use the oil without the sandwich attached. Nothing here is dangerous to the hair, it is simply a worse way to do what oil already does.
6. Household acetone and nail polish remover
Acetone, sometimes with added oils · about $3-6 · evaporates completely
Acetone is a real solvent and it will attack a lot of adhesives. It is also where the gap between what people assert and what anyone has published is widest, so this entry is deliberately narrow. What can be sourced: ATSDR states that skin contact with acetone can cause your skin to become dry, irritated, and cracked. The WHO and ILO safety card records the skin symptom as dry skin and, under long-term or repeated exposure, that the substance defats the skin, which may cause dryness or cracking. Poison Control adds that it dries out the skin, resulting in peeling and flaking, and that article never mentions hair or the scalp once.
What cannot be sourced, and we tried: any claim about what acetone does to the hair fibre, to 18-MEA, or to the skin's barrier lipids. The literature we needed was not reachable, so we can neither assert nor deny it, and a page that guesses on a safety question is worse than one that says it does not know. The practical objection stands without it. Acetone is volatile enough to flash off a scalp before it has worked through a bond, which is why you end up applying it again and again to the same patch of skin.
What it does well
- A capable solvent that will break down many adhesives quickly
- Evaporates completely, so nothing is deposited on the hair
- Cheap and available everywhere
- Nail-polish-remover formulations often add oils, which makes them milder
Where it loses
Highly flammable with explosive vapour and air mixtures, so it is out anywhere near a hot tool. ATSDR states skin contact can make skin dry, irritated and cracked, and the WHO and ILO card records that it defats the skin on repeated exposure. It is formulated for nails, and the poison-control article about it does not mention hair or scalp at all.
Verdict. Not the disaster the internet claims, and not something we would put on a scalp. Keep it for nails. If you want an evaporating solvent, rubbing alcohol is milder and Poison Control has said so.
7. WD-40 Multi-Use Product
45-50% LVP aliphatic hydrocarbon, CAS 64742-47-8 · a lubricant and penetrant · flash point 138F
We include this because people genuinely do it, and because the manufacturer has answered better than any commentary could. WD-40 Company's own FAQ states: we have never recommended the use of WD-40 for medical purposes, and it is also not recommended because of the possibility of skin irritation in people with marginalized skin, meaning eczema. Its safety data sheet says to avoid contact with eyes and avoid prolonged contact with skin, recommends chemical resistant gloves where skin contact is likely, notes that prolonged and repeated contact may produce mild irritation and defatting with possible dermatitis, and gives a flash point of 138F, the lowest on this page.
Two things we will not say, because they are not true. The sheet records restrictions on use as none identified, so it does not ban body use; that restriction lives in the FAQ. And it states the product is not classified as toxic by established criteria. Its aspiration hazard is an ingestion risk, not a skin one, and deploying it as a skin argument would be dishonest.
What it does well
- The manufacturer answers the human-use question openly and in public
- A full, current safety data sheet is published and easy to find
- It is a petroleum hydrocarbon, so it softens adhesive the way other oils do
Where it loses
The maker states it has never recommended WD-40 for medical purposes and does not recommend it because of possible skin irritation. Its 138F flash point is the lowest here, and its own sheet says to use it only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, which is not a description of a salon station. It leaves an oily film that has to be washed out.
Verdict. It will soften a bond, in the unremarkable way any petroleum oil will, and the company that makes it has told you not to put it on people. Use olive oil and keep the WD-40 for the chair's hydraulics.
What oil actually does to a tape bond
Oil swells and plasticises a pressure-sensitive adhesive rather than dissolving it. 3M's own patent work describes swollen adhesive becoming gel like and failing cohesively. That is why an oil removal leaves adhesive on both the weft and the hair, and why the panel needs a clarifying wash before anything new will stick.

All three read on 31 August 2026. No source we opened describes an oil dissolving an adhesive. The industry words are swell, soften and plasticise, and we have run no testing of our own.
What nobody has published, and what we refuse to make up
No government health agency, poison-control centre or dermatology body publishes anything about solvents applied to the scalp or about tape-in adhesive removal. That gap is the most important fact on this page. Everything sold to you as settled science here, in either direction, is somebody filling it with confidence.
- Whether acetone strips barrier lipids from skin, or 18-MEA from hair. The mechanistic literature was not reachable, so we can neither assert nor deny it. Anyone stating it firmly has a source we could not find.
- Whether these products have the wrong pH for hair. All four Goo Gone sheets record pH as Not determined, which is normal for a near-anhydrous solvent. No pH is specified or controlled, and that is not the same as it being wrong.
- Whether peanut butter, coconut oil or olive oil work as adhesive removers. No authoritative source at any level, either way.
- What is in the GOO GOO Hair Glue Remover, or in most purpose-made removers. Ingredient lists are simply not published across most of this category.
- Whether Goo Gone Original is a skin irritant. Weiman's consumer FAQ says the original products are skin irritants; its own safety data sheet says the classification criteria for skin irritation are not met. Both are the manufacturer's, and we report both.
The safety lines that actually matter
Two rules cover most of the real risk. Never use a flammable solvent near heat, because rubbing alcohol and acetone are both classed highly flammable with explosive vapour and air mixtures. And if any solvent reaches an eye, flush it with water immediately, remove contact lenses, and get medical attention.
- Flammability, ranked from the sources. Acetone and isopropyl alcohol are highly flammable with explosive vapour and air mixtures. WD-40's flash point is 138F. Goo Gone Spray Gel and Pro-Power sit at 185F and their sheets say Combustible. Goo Gone Original is above 200F. Our own remover is alcohol-based and flammable too.
- No hot tool near any of them. Not an iron mid-cool, not a dryer, not a candle on the shelf. Turn it off and move it before the cap comes off.
- Ventilate. WD-40's sheet instructs that the product be used only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, and that is sensible guidance for every solvent here including ours.
- Eyes. Goo Gone's sheet for the Original says to flush eyes with water or saline for at least five minutes, remove contact lenses, seek medical assistance and continue flushing during transport. The acetone safety card says to rinse with plenty of water, removing contact lenses if easily possible, and refer for medical attention. Do not stop flushing early because it feels better.
- Skin, if a solvent lands where it should not. Goo Gone's sheet says to wash exposed skin thoroughly with water and soap, and specifically not to use solvents or thinners to clean it off. Allergic reactions to that product can take 12 to 72 hours to appear, so a clear scalp at the end of the appointment is not a clear result.
- If anyone swallows any of this, call the Poison Help Line on 1-800-222-1222, the number printed on Goo Gone's own safety data sheet. Poison Control's warning about oils is specifically about swallowing them: these slippery liquids easily can be breathed into the lungs, which can cause pneumonia and death.
- The stop signal, and it is the most important line here. If a tab will not move after two proper applications, stop. Fighting a stuck bond with a comb is how hair breaks, and no solvent on this page is worth a panel of snapped mid-lengths.
If your scalp is sore right now
The American Academy of Dermatology's guidance on extensions is to remove them immediately if they cause pain or irritate your scalp. Pain is not a thing to solve with a stronger solvent. It is a reason to see a stylist or a doctor today, and to stop applying anything to that area in the meantime.
If a tab is stuck right now, the order to try things
Work from mildest to strongest and stop at the first thing that moves the tab. Oil first if you can wait and wash afterwards. Rubbing alcohol if you need to re-tape today. A purpose-made remover if you have one. Nothing from the garage, and nothing hot on the station.
- Clear the station before you open anythingIrons off and moved, dryer unplugged, window or extraction on. Rubbing alcohol and acetone are classed highly flammable with explosive vapour and air mixtures, so this takes thirty seconds and is not optional.
- Section properly and find the tabClip everything else away and expose the sandwich at the root. Most home-removal damage happens because someone soaks a general area rather than a specific bond.
- Try oil first if you can afford a washSaturate the tab with mineral, olive or coconut oil and leave it fifteen to twenty minutes. Poison Control's own advice for adhesive on skin is to soak in vegetable or mineral oil. Expect it to soften rather than release.
- Or rubbing alcohol if you are re-taping todayWet both sides of the tab, wait, and slide a rattail comb tip between the tabs rather than pulling. It evaporates, so nothing is left in the hair, but it is 30 percent water and slower than anything sold for the job.
- Slide, do not pullThe tab should peel apart under the comb. If you are pulling hair rather than separating tape, you are past the point where the solvent has done its work.
- Stop after two applicationsIf the bond has not moved after two proper soaks, stop and book a stylist. This is where at-home removals turn into breakage, and it matters more than any product on this page.
- Wash out anything oily before you re-tapeOil, peanut butter and WD-40 all leave a film and no adhesive will hold on it. Clarifying shampoo, full dry, then re-tab. If you used alcohol, there is nothing to wash out.
Why the labels read the way they do
It is tempting to read a household solvent's alarming label as evidence that it is dangerous on hair. It is not. It is evidence of how the product is classified. Under United States law a cosmetic is defined by intent: articles intended to be rubbed, poured, sprinkled, or sprayed on, introduced into, or otherwise applied to the human body or any part thereof for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering the appearance. Goo Gone's safety data sheet states its identified use as Cleaning product and WD-40's states lubricant and penetrant. Neither is a cosmetic, because neither is intended as one, so neither is written, tested or labelled to a cosmetic standard. That is the whole of the point and we will not push it further.
One line for stylists, because this is where the dermatology literature is unambiguous. The British Association of Dermatologists names frequency of exposure to detergents, powders, plants and solvents and the strength of concentration as the most important factors in irritant contact dermatitis, and both beauticians and hairdressers appear on its list of higher-risk occupations, which is set out alphabetically rather than in order of risk. The American Academy of Dermatology says repeated contact makes skin thicken, become scaly and develop deep cracks, and that this usually happens when someone needs to work with chemicals, such as hair dyes, cement, or solvents. A client doing one removal a year is in a different risk category from you doing forty a week. Glove up.
How these compare with what we make
This section sits at the end on purpose. Threading it through the review above would have turned a safety page into an advertisement, and leaving it out would be its own kind of dishonesty.
We make one alcohol-based remover: isopropyl alcohol, methyl ethyl ketone, ethyl acetate and deionised water, $25 for 4.0 fluid ounces, about thirty removals at $0.83 each. That is $6.25 an ounce and the most expensive remover in this category by some distance. Rubbing alcohol is a few dollars and olive oil is already in your kitchen. What the money buys is speed and the absence of a wash: because it is oil-free, nothing is deposited on the hair, so a stylist can strip a panel and re-tab in the same appointment. And because our tape and our solvent were developed against each other over about ten years of daily salon use by two licensed cosmetologists, it releases our own tabs on the first pass more often than a general-purpose solvent does. Note the scope carefully. That is an advantage on our tape and nothing at all on anybody else's, and on other brands' adhesive our remover underperforms.
What the money does not buy is a safety claim over oil. Oil has a poison centre recommending it and we do not. Ours is flammable and oil is not. No official body has evaluated our remover any more than it has evaluated a bottle of olive oil, and we are not going to imply otherwise on a page people read with adhesive in their hair. The honest case for a purpose-made remover is that it is faster, tidier and more predictable than the kitchen. It is not that the kitchen is dangerous.
If the hair is not ours
Buy the remover made by whoever made the tape. Ours is formulated against our own adhesive and underperforms on other brands, and we would rather you got a clean release than an order from us. Four ingredients, published, with the ventilation and storage notes that go with an alcohol-based solvent. Where the free option genuinely beats ours
Oil works, and it has official backing we do not have. The National Capital Poison Center's own guidance for adhesive on skin is to soak the skin in vegetable or mineral oil or apply petroleum jelly. No poison centre has ever recommended our product, because none has ever evaluated it. If safety on skin is the axis you care about most, the bottle of olive oil in your kitchen is the better-evidenced choice, and we are not going to argue with a poison centre to sell a $25 remover.
It is free, and it is already in your house. Ours is $25 for four ounces, $6.25 an ounce, the dearest in the category. For someone removing one set of extensions once, the arithmetic does not favour us and no amount of writing changes that.
Rubbing alcohol is chemically the same family as our own remover, at a few dollars for sixteen ounces, and Poison Control says small amounts on skin are safe. It is slower and weaker because it is thirty percent water, but it evaporates just as completely and leaves nothing to wash out. If you want the oil-free behaviour without the price, start there.
The honest case for a purpose-made remover is speed, mess and predictability. It is not safety, and we have no evidence that would let us claim otherwise. Anyone telling you the kitchen remedies are dangerous is going further than the published record does.
What this comparison is based on, and what it is not
This page is based on the manufacturer product pages, safety data sheets and ingredient disclosures listed below, all opened and read on 31 August 2026, plus twenty-one years of removing tape-in extensions in a working salon. Where a manufacturer publishes a figure we have quoted it. Where one does not, the cell is blank or the sentence says not published, rather than being filled with an estimate.
We have run no laboratory test of any kind on any substance here. No adhesion testing, no residue measurement, no skin or scalp testing. Every performance or dwell figure is somebody's published claim, reproduced as a claim. We deliberately did not publish several mechanisms that circulate widely, including anything about acetone and barrier lipids or hair proteins, because the literature we needed was not reachable and a guess on a safety page is worse than an admission.
We make and sell a tape-in remover, which gives us an obvious interest in your conclusion, so we have stated the case against ourselves as clearly as the case for us. Oil is genuinely recommended by a poison centre and ours is not. Rubbing alcohol is genuinely the same chemistry for a fraction of the price. We are the most expensive remover in this category. We have no affiliate arrangement with any brand or retailer named here and earn nothing from anything on this page.
